Dayna Ritchey – Education and Community Engagement Manager – Alzheimer’s Association

24/7 Helpline – 800-272-3900 and alz.org

Mission: The Alzheimer’s Association leads the way to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.

When did the organization start and by whom?

The Alzheimer’s Association was founded in 1980 by a group of family caregivers and individuals, who recognized the need for an organization that would unite caregivers, provide support to those facing Alzheimer’s and advance research into the disease.

What makes your organization stand out among others?

All our programs and services are free.  We have a free 24/7 helpline staffed with dementia specialists at 800-272-3900.  We give free education programs to any audience in need of information on dementia and aging including lifestyle changes to focus on for cognitive health, warning signs you should consult your dr. about and how to give care to someone who has dementia.  We also offer free support groups in the community for family members who have loved ones with dementia, and Memory Cafes for people with dementia to participate with their family members in a fun, entertaining and engaging activity via Zoom or in-person.

What are the greatest needs of the organization?

Funding to advance research on dementia as well as participants for clinical trials; volunteers to help lead support groups, Memory Cafes and give educational presentations, and any way we can raise awareness of our programs and services so that families impacted by dementia don’t have to go through it alone.

Who do you assist & why?

Anyone who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s or another dementia.  This is a progressive, individualized disease that few people are educated about or equipped to manage.
